In a world consumed by culinary delights and gastronomic adventures, the shadowed realm of eating disorders often remains unexplored. While global awareness on these mental health conditions is burgeoning, within the Indian context, a veil of silence shrouds their prevalence and impact. According to a recent 2023 review paper in the Acta Neurophysiological journal, critical topics like eating habits and body dissatisfaction remain largely unstudied in India.

Rishita, a pseudonym to protect her identity, is a 24-year-old enthusiast who adored delving into new culinary experiences. From being a picky eater in her childhood, she evolved into someone eager to relish diverse cuisines. However, her life took a tumultuous turn in 2022, plunging her into severe anxiety, thus initiating a distressing journey with food and her mental health. So according to her statement;
"In 2022, I was going through a very difficult phase in my personal life, which induced severe anxiety…I started starving myself until my brain screamed for sustenance. Even then, I chose to refrain from food, surviving on coffee and naps. Despite having a cook preparing fresh meals, I discarded them and opted for small portions, discarding the remainder," she recounted.
Days of stress-eating and subsequent forceful purging followed suit until she collapsed at work. Hospitalized for a week due to low blood pressure and hemoglobin, the repercussions were stark—her skin lost its luster, hair thinned, and she felt visibly feeble.
In December 2022, she was diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa, a severe mental illness characterized by self-starvation and consequential weight loss, posing significant health risks as per the American Psychiatric Association.
The road to recovery was arduous. Srishti grappled with the prescribed meal quantities, often unable to consume the stipulated portions. Bloating and restlessness ensued on days when she managed to complete the meals. The intense fear of gaining weight haunted her, a hallmark trait of anorexia nervosa according to the American Psychiatric Association.
Gradually, with proper treatment, Srishti navigated towards a healthier lifestyle, reshaping her relationship with food and her body. "Ten months of prioritizing my well-being, and I've witnessed positive changes," she affirmed.
Understanding Eating Disorders:
Eating disorders encompass severe psychiatric conditions, leading to disrupted eating behaviors and distressing thoughts. These disorders manifest in various forms like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, AFRID, and others.
Globally, these disorders affect at least 9% of the population, with a concerning doubling of prevalence rates from 3.4% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018, as per The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Dr. Shambhavi Jaiman, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Fortis Healthcare, highlighted, "Eating disorders involve significant disturbances in eating behavior, often characterized by an obsession with food, weight, or body image. These disorders have serious physical and emotional consequences, proving challenging to overcome."
Roots and Challenges in India:
Despite their global impact, eating disorders remain largely underreported in India. A lack of studies addressing eating habits and body dissatisfaction exacerbates the underreporting. Counselor Aanandita Vaghani sheds light on the shame associated with eating disorders and how individuals often perceive them as physical rather than psychological issues.
Dr. Jaiman and Vaghani both accentuated the outdated statistics in India, attributing the underreporting to the stigma attached, hindering many from seeking help.
Challenges in Treatment and Stigma:
Treatment for eating disorders is intricate, often complicated by distorted thoughts regarding food, body image, and weight. Dr. Jaiman underscores the necessity of a supportive environment and collaborative decision-making in treatment.
Untreated eating disorders lead to severe physical and psychological consequences, increasing the risk of comorbid conditions like depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies.
Stigma and a lack of awareness remain significant hurdles in addressing eating disorders. Vaghani advocates for open dialogue, destigmatization, and the involvement of a multidisciplinary team for effective treatment.
Conclusion:
Eating disorders aren't merely struggles with food; they represent complex battles within the mind and body. Srishti's journey unravels the grim realities that many silently endure. Early recognition, support, and professional intervention are pivotal in reclaiming lives from the clutches of these debilitating disorders.
Awareness, dialogue, and a compassionate approach can pave the way for a society where individuals suffering from eating disorders find solace, understanding, and a path to recovery. Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it's the first step towards healing.
